MATHS SKILLS IMPROVEMENT
COURSES
Aims: To improve students’ total Maths skills
so they:
gain an understanding
of processes
no longer depend on
rote learning
can tackle new
processes with confidence
INTRODUCTION TO PROBLEM SOLVING
For Year 3, Year 5 or Year 7 students who do four sessions, two
hours each session, in a group of eight students. The mystery
of the "written problem" is examined and techniques are taught and
practised. Students must have maths skills at a level
appropriate for the their year level to gain from these
workshops.
MATHS IMPROVEMENT
Most students learn their Maths by rote, by trying to just learn
rules. Our programs are designed to give children a
real understanding of the number system and how it
works.
Some children who have lost confidence in their mathematical
ability simply need a little help to learn the skills to get back
on track.
The first parts of the courses will proceed through the use of
games. Concrete materials will be used wherever
appropriate.
All skills in each course are introduced in small mechanical
steps. This step by step approach is enhanced by clear
explanations from the teacher. In this way many
operations or concepts that have seemed mysterious in the past
become clearer to the student.
Each of the sessions revises with real materials
the children’s understanding of the basics in Maths.
In the past we have conducted theses classes
with groups of children. We have found that two year 4
students may be at very different levels of understanding and so
neither child receives the teaching directed at his/her particular
difficulty in understanding.
We are now offering these prepared sessions
on an individual basis.
Each session is for two hours with a break of
ten minutes included.
eg from 9.00am to
11.10am
You phone or email info@hendersons.com.au to book
the times you would prefer. You may book just for one
lot of two hours at a time.
Students needing general improvement in maths do
these courses.
Sometimes a year 5 child might do the four fraction
sections [including decimals] before doing our scholarship
workshops because her/his parents realize that this area has not
been thoroughly covered in class.
